Paso Robles became an American Viticultural Area on October 4, 1983, recognizing the region's distinct terroir and winemaking potential. The area's history with grapes reaches back to 1787, when Spanish missionaries introduced wine grapes to California through the Mission system. Commercial wine production in the Paso Robles area began in the 1880s, though the industry remained small until the late twentieth century. Since 1990, the wine industry has transformed the region's economy: the number of wineries grew from fewer than 20 to more than 200 today, and planted vineyard acreage expanded from roughly 5,000 acres to 40,000 acres across the appellation.
The region cultivates over 40 different grape varieties, moving beyond its historic Zinfandel vineyards to include Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Rhône-style wines. Visitors to the wine country experience everything from casual outdoor tastings to underground cave tours, and many take advantage of the region's outdoor activities—some wineries offer tastings on horseback or after zip-line adventures. The landscape of windy backroads, rural beauty, and a walkable downtown have made wine country tourism a major part of Paso Robles' economy and identity.
